Am finding the IP4 to be a serious pain to be honest.
Had major problems upgrading the phones firmware just after activation and am now having problems where once the call has been connected the person on the other end of the line can't hear me but I CAN hear them!
Only way around the issue is to activate the speaker and have the call blasted out through the phone speakers....not much fun when your takin a call from the missus in the middle of a supermarket aisle and she's givin you an earful about what size nappies to bring home!

All messing aside, I've googled the problem and it appears to be very like the widely reported Proximity sensor issue.

Two questions:

1 Has anyone else been experiencing this issue? If so can you share your experiences here please.

2 Vodafone, have you any idea when a fix will be available from apple for this? If its not in the next week or so I'll be asking for my 370 snots back or else looking for a replacement handset as the phone is nigh on unusable for making or recieving calls

Thanks

This doesn't sound like a proximity sensor issue, it simply sounds like a faulty handset with an inop earpiece speaker. On a functional iPhone4, the speaker will be active whether the phone is held at your head of just in your hand, it doesn't matter, which is why I think you have a different issue.

Thanks for the response bkehoe. I'm not really sure either way.
From the research I've done on the issue on the web, a lot of the time the problem seems to relate to the call being muted in error, or the icons on the call screen being activated in error mid call., hence my assumption that its a case of the proximity sensor issue.
The only reason I mentioned the speaker angle is that currently thats theonly workaround that I have to be able to make/recieve a voice call.

Have tried doing a restore of the firmware and refreshing the carrier settings on the iphone, neither of which have proved successful.
At the mo I have a 400 Euro gadget that wont allow me to make a proper phone call :)

Hi Zooprune, if I may sum this up for you.

1) Using the phone up to your ear, you can hear but they cannot hear you.
2) Putting the phone on loud speaker and holding the phone away from your ear, means they can hear you and you can hear them.

The second point suggests that your mic is working correctly as it is used in both circumstances so to me sounds like a software issue but can I ask, are you using as case for the iphone? If so can you put a link to it?

Hi Tarmons,

Thats exactly the problem.
I've ordered the Apple Bumper Case, but in the meantime am using a cheap case I picked up on Friday morning. Unfortunately I don't have a link, but its a simple faux leather flip cover case that the iphone slots into.

Did you check the performance out side of the Case?

On more than one occasion I have come across cases that cover or partially cover the sensors on the phone.

No joy I'm afraid. Took the phone out of the case and had exactly the same problems when making and recieving a call

Sorry to hear that Zooprune, only thing I can think of is to try restore the phone before contacting apple.

As bkehoe as stated, this does not sound like the reported proximity issue. With the reported proximity issue, you can accidently mute a call or end a call or perform another function because the screen as not blanked off. But in your case, the person on the other end cannot hear you at all so this has not even given you the opportunity to press mute by accident.

Just googled it and it seems that there are two mics on the iPhone 4, as opposed to 1 on mine (3GS). Each mic is used for different applications. Apparently Speaker Phone and Video Recording use the mic at the top of the phone, while voice memo and I believe (upto the ear calls) use the mic near the speakers at the bottom.

So try recording a voice memo to test the bottom mic, as the speaker phone works, video recording should too. If voice memo does not work, it looks like a hardware fault and back to apple.

I would still try a restore though, do not load any custom settings, apps, etc, just your sim and make a call.

Thanks a million Tarmons, I'll give it a restore tonight and see how that goes, many thanks for taking the time to respond.

Hi Tarmons,
Just a quick update for you.
I was on the point of returning the phone, but did a couple of restores over the weekend and all seems to be working ok now.
Fingers crossed it'll stay that way :)

Thanks again for your help
